I was on this great old vessel for a month in October 1957. I was sent down to the River Gal where she was laid up to help prepare her and take her to Briton Ferry for breaking up. |

I joined the San Felix at Sunderland in March, 1953. I was a deck cadet and this was my first ship. She was in drydock for major repairs but I had to live aboard under somewhat appalling conditions. She took a furthur 2 months to complete repairs/maintenence and the whole scene was totally alien to me as I had lived life in a somewhat sheltered background in Devonshire and had no idea of what to expect. However, the time spent in Sunderland was fun, even allowing for the living conditions, and my princely wage of 7 pounds 10 shillings a month. We finally sailed for the Persian Gulf on 14 May,1953 when my apprenticeship formally started. I received no credit for the time served in the dry-dock as I was not signed on until departure! I stayed with Eagle Oil until they were formally taken over by Shell in,I believe, 1959. I was Second Mate when I left and I continued with a life at sea until 1966 when I emigrated to Canada where I still reside. |
