Me (Stuart) and fellow catering boy Dave were on the final voyage. All crew knew who to go to after the bond locker was mysteriously found empty! It was a great experience and I remember the engineers working frantically to mend the pump for 3 days and the old man desperately resisting a tow from an American Fleet Auxillary ship (I think). Finally he had to give in to a tow. It was a beautiful day but a really heavy swell and when the ship rolled our port was completely submerged! The ship was towed to Okinawa where we left her and flew to Hong K.ong. We heard later that she broke up. Will be interested to hear of any others' memories of this exciting period in my life. |
