First trip eng app signed in Rotterdam, then to Palermo for dry dock. The engine room was the next place to hell, boilers leaked more soot and smoke than what went up the stack. Back of the boiler room was inches deep in soot. After one long shut down all eng apps went on strike and refused to go back down again until they had a decent rest.

Yes, I remember the canal being closed. My first trip on Velletia, Rotterdam to Mena diverted to Las Palmas to add fuel then 6 weeks round the Cape to Mena and 6 weeks back and didn't even have a toothbrush! An unforgettable experience to see Table Mountain from Capetown Bay as we put in to land an injured pumpman.

maiden voyage of veletia laying along side a aircraft carrier haveing just passed my ab ticket aberdan and back good ship nice to of sailed on her

I was signed on the Velletia in Hamburg as an EDH in Hamberg. We had two weeks anchored off Cowes Isle of Wight with the Volvatella due to the world glut of oil.
Eventually they shut down one boiler and we sailed at 12 knots for Mina Al Amahadi
We loaded 28ooo + tons of oil in six hours. The !st mate was fast. Paid off in Newcastle 11 monthe and ten days later. I still have my wages slip. Happy Days

This being my first trip as a seagoing engineer, I was not quite sure what to expect, but soon learnt that I had the right sense of humour when I was introduced to the term ERRDS, for those that do not know this is the acronym for 'engine room dobie draws'. Apparently the engineer that I relieved wore a pair for seventy eight cosecutive days, they were eventually buried at sea with due ceremony. Anyone remember this from 1966?
This term stuck with me throughout my seagoing days and is still with me even to this day.
