On voyage from Rio de Janeiro to Curacao, approx 4000miles. After discharging a full cargo of aviation spirit. Ship broke down about halfway to Curacao, electic generator needed repair. Scotch boiler leaking, unable to maintain steam pressure so no fuel pumps, no electricity. All meat thrown overboard, no freezer or fridge. I was responsible for the N.U.C. lights. If you needed a wash, you dropped a bucket down the forward cofferdam for fresh water If you needed the toilet, one had to get a bucket of seawater first. Sparks used emergency batteries to contact London Office. Eventually the "San Salvador" arrived on scene and passd an insurance wire to us, This was shackled to the anchor cable. First we had to hang off the anchor, with only muscle power and blocks, it was very difficult. We paid out six shackles and the tow commenced, we managed up to six knots. As I had recently completed two years on HMS Conway I was quite expert at semaphore, so I was summoned to the bridge to read and send noon positions. Catering was very difficult, no galley fires, we did boil some water for tea using a rivet machine on the poop. On arrival at Curacao, we had to retrieve the anchor cable before tugs took us in to port |
